On January 16th, 2025 Nintendo casually dropped a teaser for the Nintendo Switch 2. Rumors, speculation and leaks had been going around about a sequel to the acclaimed Nintendo Switch for years, with things reaching a peak toward the end of 2024. Finally, Nintendo has revealed that the Nintendo Switch 2 is coming.
The brief trailer shares a little bit about the upcoming console, it’s bigger, sleeker and seemingly features an improved fold out stand for tabletop mode in addition to the usual bells and whistles you’d expect. Much like the original Switch, this one also seems to come with a dock for use with a TV or could be used in handheld mode. Other than the size and slight tweaks, it doesn’t look very different from the first Nintendo Switch(which is totally fine, why fix what ain’t broken?). One thing worth noting are the joycons. The first Switch was notorious for its thumbstick drift on the original joycons, necessitating sending them in for repairs. There’s a lot of concern over whether this issue has been addressed by the Switch 2 but only time will tell. What is interesting is that Switch 2 joycons look like they click on instead of sliding on like the original. Does that mean the joycons have updated in design? We’ll find out soon enough.
Lastly the trailer concludes by showing us that the Switch 2 does indeed have upgraded graphics, as demonstrated by what appears to be Mario Kart running in a stunning HD, both handheld and on a TV. They also announced that the Switch 2 will have backwards compatibility with some games from the regular Nintendo Switch, both physical and digital. That likely means some of your furry favorites like Animal Crossing, Pokemon, Donkey Kong and more will still be playable and maybe even some third party titles like Monster Hunter, Okami and even Spyro. It’s not yet clear which games will or won’t be backwards compatible but more details are on the way as a Nintendo Direct was also announced for April 2nd. Until then, get hyped as the future's looking good for Nintendo.
The original Nintendo Switch released March 3, 2017, almost 8 years ago as of the time of this writing. It’s gone on to become one of Nintendo’s best selling consoles and put them back on the home console map after the Wii U failed to make any significant splashes. It’s since received newer versions in the form of the handheld only Switch lite and the higher end Switch OLED. No formal date has been announced for the Switch 2 as of yet but it is slated for 2025. Keep your eyes peeled for the upcoming Nintendo Direct in April and stay tuned for more coverage from us!
